Customizable Mid-Century Tufted High-Back Armchair

A statement vintage chair with a tall, supportive back, deep seat, and classic tufted detailing—ready to be transformed to match your space.

During the mid-20^th century, furniture designers combined traditional French Provincial and Neoclassical silhouettes with the bold colors and materials of the era. The use of crushed gold velvet and extremely high backs became a hallmark of the “Hollywood Regency” and “Mediterranean Revival” styles that dominated American interior design during the 1960s and 1970s.

Perfect as a reading chair, study chair, or elegant accent piece—this is the kind of silhouette that looks timeless in a neutral linen, dramatic in velvet, or elevated in a patterned textile.

Silhouette & style cues

• High, slightly reclined back” classic “reading chair” posture—made to sit in for a while.
• Deep button tufting on the inside back (diamond tuft pattern), which is a more tailored, higher-end upholstery detail than a plain tight back.
• Decorative tassel/cord detail at the top corners with metal ball finials: that little “extra” detail reads Hollywood Regency / traditional with a glam twist, common in late 20th-century vintage pieces.
• Warm stained wood with visible grain and turned details:
• Turned front posts/legs and turned arm supports, traditional woodworking cue.
• Straight-ish side rails and a clean frame line keeps it from looking overly Victorian.

Upholstery construction (what it appears to be)

• Tight (fixed) inside back with tufting and covered buttons.
• Loose seat cushion with welt piping (corded edge).
• Padded arm caps (upholstered arm “pads” sitting on top of the wood arms).
• The seat is thick and structured.

How Ordering Works

This chair is restored and finished to order, tailored to your style from start to finish. Turnaround is approximately 4 to 6 weeks once we finalize your selections and I have your fabric in hand.

1. Choose your look
   Pick your upholstery fabric (and any finish preferences for the frame). If you’re not sure, I’m happy to help you narrow options so it fits your space and lifestyle.
2. Send your fabric or have me source it
   I gladly accept Customer’s Own Material—you can ship or drop off your fabric. Prefer that I source it? I can do that too (fabric costs are separate).
3. Restoration + upholstery
   I’ll refinish the frame per your preferences, rebuild the seat as needed for comfort and longevity, and upholster everything with a clean, tailored finish.
4. Pickup or shipping
   Local pickup in Philadelphia is available. White-glove shipping can be arranged at additional cost.

• Please send upholstery-weight fabric suitable for seating (I can confirm before you purchase).
• Yardage depends on pattern repeat and fabric width—message me your fabric link or a photo and I’ll tell you exactly what you need.
• Turnaround begins when the fabric arrives.
